The existing Rice University Gymnasium was built in 1951. Despite subsequent additions, it failed to adequately meet the growing needs of various campus user groups, including varsity, intramural and recreational sports. An extensive analysis of existing facilities and user needs led to a proposal for additions and alterations that included this practice facility for men's basketball, women's volleyball and women's basketball, plus offices, weight room and storage facilities.
