This new animal shelter was designed to meet the primary objectives of creating spaces that are embracing and welcoming, that promote animal health and well-being, that support animal care and animal care education, and that encourage public visits and animal adoption. The design provides flexibility to serve the needs of the community today with room to expand for increased animal capacity in the future. The building is designed following LEED best practices and complies with the updated energy codes.
Sized with consideration to operational costs, the DeKalb County Animal Shelter was situated on the site to take advantage of the sloping elevation and to address storm water mitigation. An exercise and walking path for dogs will circle around a gently sloping green space that will have a detention pond at its center.
