Location: Artesian Lake, Texas
Located on an island in the Big Thicket woods of East Texas, this log cabin feels at home with nature. Designed to blend in with the wooded environment, the home is difficult to spot from a distance. The design is a combination of hand-hewn log walls with a timber frame, hammer-beam roof truss system that is held together with true mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs. The structure includes a central great room that features a cozy fireplace seating arrangement, the 12-foot long farmhouse dining table and a large seating area positioned for maximum lake views out the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. Because the house is designed for large family gatherings, the kitchen is prominently located to be central to the activity in the house. The upstairs loft overlooks the great room and incorporates the study area and spare bedrooms. The walk-out basement doubles as the playroom and sleeping quarters for the kids. Spanning all three levels with an open well, the stone chimney is the focal point of the house. The approach to the island is through the woods and over a heavy timber bridge that spans a 50-foot waterway. The outside decks on three sides of the home take advantage of the lake views through the trees. Completing the exterior is a boat dock, wooded cove trail and a breezeway that has seen many fun family gatherings.
