Arizona Humane Society Campus for Compassion
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
This 20-acre site serves as the hub of the Arizona Humane Society. The elements of this campus include The All Creatures Learning / Youth Education Center, the Animal Adoption Center, areas for the Saddle-Up and Equestrian Rescue Programs, a S.N.A.P. (Spay / Neuter Assistance Program) Clinic, Administrative Offices and a Columbarium. The master planning of this site required the incorporation of horse trails, walk and play spaces for neighborhood participation, exercise yards for pets awaiting adoption and meandering paths throughout. The relationship of the buildings to the site amenities was carefully laid out to facilitate organization, security and easy flow among all functions.
To accommodate the adjacent neighborhoods, the outdoor dog kennels have special acoustical barriers to reflect and absorb the noise of barking dogs. These kennels are arranged so dogs do not face one another, resulting in reduced stress and less barking. The kennel doors are designed with glass on the upper panel to allow potential adopters to view the dogs in a less jail-like environment. These features and others help create a very comfortable environment for the dogs, while at the same time making them all the more adoptable.
